From Thursday onward, officers in Amsterdam-Zuidoost will have the authority to stop and search anyone suspected of carrying weapons, a measure introduced in response to a series of recent shootings. The enhanced powers will last for one week, covering key hotspots in the borough.
Under the Public Order Act, police can now conduct searches without prior suspicion across several neighborhoods, including the Diamantbuurt, Bijlmerbajes and Reigersbos. Authorities say the temporary injunction aims to disrupt escalating violence and reduce the risk of further gun incidents.
Rising Tensions after Recent Attacks

Mayor Halsema and Safety Alderman Ruimt both defended the stop-and-search powers as a temporary but essential tool. “Our priority is to keep citizens safe,” the mayor said. “We will monitor the operation daily to ensure rights are respected and that the measure is lifted as soon as the situation stabilizes.”
Police commanders have pledged to review all searches and record outcomes, promising a full public report once the measure expires next Thursday. They stress that any individual stopped and searched has the right to request a receipt outlining the reason and outcome of the intervention.
