Exactly one year after 17-year-old Lisa was fatally stabbed while cycling home to Abcoude following a night out in Amsterdam, friends, family and neighbours gathered along the Poelpad to honour her memory and renew calls for safer routes.
Community Vigil Honors Lisa’s Memory
A few dozen people lit candles and placed flowers at the site where Lisa’s life was tragically cut short. Among them were classmates clutching photos, local youth groups wearing T-shirts emblazoned with her name, and Lisa’s parents, who spoke softly of their daughter’s bright spirit.
Calls for Immediate Safety Upgrades
Residents used the anniversary to press authorities for urgent improvements:
- Enhanced lighting along the Poelpad and adjacent cycle paths
- Emergency call stations at regular intervals
- Increased evening patrols by local police
- Clearer signage warning cyclists of underpass areas
“No parent should ever have to endure what we’ve gone through,” said Lisa’s mother, her voice breaking. “If this route had been properly lit, maybe Lisa would still be with us.”
Authorities Respond
The municipality has fast-tracked plans to install solar-powered LED lights along the darkest stretches of the path and is reviewing the placement of emergency call buttons. Mayor Jeroen van Dijk pledged that work would begin before winter, but acknowledged residents’ impatience.
“We share the community’s grief and their determination to make these routes safer,” the mayor said. “Our goal is to ensure no one else faces the dangers Lisa did.”
Police Remain Vigilant
Local police have maintained an increased presence in the area since the attack, conducting random checks and encouraging cyclists to travel in pairs or groups after dusk. Inspector Marijke Bosch urged anyone with information about suspicious activity to come forward.
As candles flickered in the evening breeze, the gathering ended with a moment of silence. Though Lisa cannot be brought back, her community’s resolve to prevent another tragedy shines brighter than ever.
