A 12-year-old Dutch boy is in critical condition in an Austrian hospital after a 30-metre fall while hiking in the Zillertal Alps. The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon near Mayrhofen in the state of Tyrol, when the boy lost his footing on a steep section of trail and tumbled into a ravine.

Rescue and medical response

The second boy, treated for bruises and shock, declined further hospital treatment and returned to the hiking trail with his family.

Tyrolean police have opened an inquiry to determine the exact circumstances of the fall. Early findings suggest the boy slipped on loose gravel along a section of trail rated “easy” by regional hiking guides. No signs of foul play or external interference have been reported.
Local authorities reminded visitors to wear sturdy footwear, carry sufficient water and check weather forecasts before setting out on alpine routes, even on paths designated as family-friendly.
The boy’s parents, who live in the province of Drenthe, travelled immediately to Innsbruck to be by their son’s side. Austrian officials are providing consular assistance to the family as they await updates on his condition.
