Police arrest 14-year-old for impersonating a policeman

Police in Zwolle have taken into custody a 14-year-old boy suspected of impersonating an officer to gain entry into private homes and carry out thefts. Wearing a makeshift uniform complete with bogus badge and handcuffs, the youth allegedly convinced residents he was conducting routine checks before making off with valuables.

The case came to light after several homeowners reported similar incidents over the past two weeks. Each described an unnerving encounter: a young man in police-style attire knocking on doors, flashing what appeared to be official identification and warning of supposed security breaches in the neighborhood.

Modus Operandi

  • Targeted quiet streets in Zwolle’s residential districts late in the afternoon
  • Used a downloaded police logo and purchased surplus gear from online marketplaces
  • Distracted occupants by asking to inspect identification or electronic devices
  • Stole cash, jewelry and small electronics before leaving in a rented bicycle

Investigation and Arrest

Following multiple reports, investigators analyzed surveillance footage and eyewitness statements. Detectives traced the suspect’s route and discovered a pattern—each theft occurred within a one-mile radius. Yesterday afternoon, plainclothes officers intercepted the teenager near his home, recovering stolen items and the counterfeit uniform.

“This arrest highlights the importance of verifying an officer’s credentials,” said Zwolle police spokesperson Marieke van Dijk. “Real officers will always display official identification and, when in doubt, residents are encouraged to call 0900-8844 to confirm.”

Legal and Community Response

  • The 14-year-old is now in juvenile detention, pending court proceedings under the Dutch Child Protection Board.
  • No injuries were reported, but several victims described feeling violated and anxious.
  • Local neighborhood associations have organized safety workshops and urged residents to remain vigilant.

Authorities remind the public that legitimate police officers travel in marked vehicles and follow strict protocols. Anyone approached by an individual claiming to be law enforcement should request proper identification and report any suspicious behavior immediately.
