The Dutch Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) has ordered the online retailer De Peptidekoning to immediately stop selling and advertising unlicensed weight‐loss medications on its website and social media channels. The action follows an investigation into various peptide products marketed as slimming aids without the required marketing authorisations.
Unlicensed Substances Under Scrutiny
Among the prohibited products were:
- Semaglutide – a peptide analogue used in prescription treatment for type 2 diabetes and recently approved for weight management under strict medical supervision.
- AOD9604 – promoted as a fat‐burning peptide, but lacking any formal approval for human use in the Netherlands.
Social Media Advertising Triggers Investigation
IGJ inspectors flagged De Peptidekoning’s aggressive online marketing campaigns on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. Through targeted ads and influencer endorsements, the webshop promised rapid weight loss and lipolysis effects, claims which IGJ says are unsubstantiated and illegal without clinical trials and authorisation.
Legal Requirements and Enforcement
Under Dutch and European pharmaceutical law, any substance intended to treat or prevent disease or modify physiological processes must hold a valid marketing authorisation. The IGJ granted De Peptidekoning a two‐week deadline to remove all promotional materials and product listings. Failure to comply may result in administrative fines or criminal prosecution.

The IGJ urges consumers who have purchased these unapproved peptides to cease use immediately and consult a healthcare professional if they experience adverse effects.
