NEC out of Champions League after early red card kills hopes

NEC Nijmegen’s hopes of reaching the Champions League group stage were dashed on Wednesday as a harsh red card and defensive collapse sealed a 6-1 aggregate defeat to Sturm Graz.

Stark First-Leg Deficit

In the opening leg in Graz, NEC never recovered from an early onslaught. Two goals inside the first 15 minutes put the Dutch side on the back foot, and a late third strike condemned Patrick Pothuizen’s team to a 3-0 loss. Despite patches of possession and a handful of half-chances, NEC failed to convert and returned home staring at an uphill battle.

Early Dismissal Ends Return Leg Ambitions

At De Goffert Stadium, NEC needed a fast start but instead found themselves reduced to ten men within 20 minutes. Left-back Jorn Vossen was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Peter Zulj, leaving his teammates scrambling to reorganise.

Sturm Graz immediately capitalised, with Aleksandar Vizinger slotting home twice before half-time. Although NEC pulled one back through Uros Vidaković’s towering header just after the break, Graz sealed the tie with a late penalty converted by Philipp Hosiner.

Moving on to the Europa League

  • Aggregate score: Sturm Graz 6–1 NEC Nijmegen
  • Home leg: NEC 1–3 Sturm Graz
  • Away leg: Sturm Graz 3–0 NEC
  • Key moment: Jorn Vossen’s 18th-minute red card

Manager Ruud Brood admitted his side never recovered from the numerical disadvantage. “The red card forced us to abandon our game plan,” he said. “We showed character to score, but against quality opposition you cannot afford to give them such an advantage.”

NEC will now drop into the Europa League group stage draw, where they will be seeded in Pot 4 alongside other clubs eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers. The club’s focus will shift toward European competition that begins in October.
