This summer’s unprecedented dry spell has stripped the Zeezuiper reserve in Noord-Brabant of virtually all its water for the first time in seven centuries. Once a thriving marshland teeming with aquatic wildlife, the parched basin now resembles a barren salt flat scattered with decaying fish carcasses.
Ecological Toll and Local Response
Ecologists warn that the disappearance of wetlands like Zeezuiper disrupts entire food chains. “These habitats act as vital nurseries for fish and amphibians,” says Dr. Marijke van Driel of Wageningen University. “Their loss accelerates biodiversity collapse and intensifies flooding risks when rains finally return.”
- Fish mortalities: Tens of thousands of roach, perch and pike washed ashore in the past week.
- Bird migration: Wading birds have abandoned the reserve, depriving nearby farmlands of natural pest control.

Farmers and Water Managers Scramble
Local farmers, already battling poor harvests, are now facing increasing salinity in groundwater. Water boards have begun emergency pumping from deeper aquifers, but critics argue this is a stopgap that may trigger land subsidence.
“We’re pumping more than ever, but if the drought persists, our reserves will be exhausted by autumn,” admits Joost de Groot of the Brabantse Delta Water Board. “Longer‐term solutions must include restoring natural water retention landscapes.”
Calls for Restorative Action
Conservationists are urging the government to invest in:
