Driven by surging global chip demand and major capacity expansions by key players such as ASML and NXP, the Dutch chip industry now ranks among Europe’s fastest-growing technology clusters.
Exports fuel expansion
Export markets have been pivotal to this upswing. In 2025, 45 percent of Dutch chip output was shipped to Asia, while the United States and other European nations accounted for 30 percent and 20 percent, respectively. Emerging markets and automotive electronics have emerged as new growth corridors, further diversifying the sector’s customer base.
R&D investment reaches new heights
Research and development spending jumped by 16 percent year-on-year, topping €4.4 billion as companies race to develop next-generation lithography systems and advanced node technologies. Collaborative projects between industry and Dutch universities have accelerated innovation in areas such as extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography and semiconductor packaging.
Workforce and infrastructure bolster capacity
Employment across the semiconductor ecosystem rose by 18 percent since 2019, with the sector now supporting over 53,000 high-skilled jobs. Government incentives under the EU Chips Act have unlocked roughly €1.5 billion in grants, enabling factory upgrades, cleanroom expansions, and new research facilities.
