Vandals attempted to ignite a blaze late Monday at an empty building in Valkenswaard, Noord-Brabant, earmarked to become a shelter for unaccompanied teenage asylum seekers. Neighbours reported shattered glass and flickering flames just after midnight, prompting a swift response from local fire crews who contained the fire before it could spread. No one was injured, but the structure sustained smoke and heat damage to an interior storage area.
Police have launched a hate-crime investigation, collecting CCTV footage and canvassing residents for witnesses. Patrols in the vicinity have been stepped up while investigators pursue leads. “This act of intimidation against vulnerable youngsters is utterly unacceptable,” said a spokesperson for the regional police.
Under plans drawn up by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA), the former school building will provide secure accommodation for as many as 50 unaccompanied minors aged 12 to 18. The facility was due to open next month, offering education, medical care and legal support to teens awaiting decisions on their asylum claims.
