Joost Niemöller has announced his resignation as editor-in-chief of far-right broadcaster Ongehoord Nederland (ON), less than a month after igniting controversy with comments praising Adolf Hitler’s treatment of “his own people.”
The remarks, aired during a live panel discussion, sparked outrage across the political spectrum. Niemöller suggested that Hitler’s atrocities “only” targeted Germans, a statement widely condemned as an attempt to downplay the Holocaust.
Complaints poured in from viewers, political parties and media watchdogs. The Dutch Media Authority received multiple reports accusing ON of breaching broadcasting standards, while the governing VVD party publicly denounced the remarks as “beyond the pale.”
