Police in Overasselt and nearby villages in Gelderland uncovered an extensive arsenal while executing search warrants at 17 properties on Wednesday. The operation, linked to a series of recent burglaries targeting second homes, resulted in three adult arrests and two juveniles taken into custody.
Weapons cache seized
- More than 30 knives and machetes
- A loaded hand grenade (rendered safe by Explosive Ordnance Disposal)
- Ammunition rounds and bullets
- Two crossbows
- An unloaded pistol
Officers also discovered improvised batons, various blunt instruments and tools that could facilitate forced entry. A police spokesperson confirmed none of the firearms were operational at the time of seizure.
Link to burglary spree under scrutiny
Investigators are probing a rash of break-ins at holiday homes across North Brabant, Limburg, Gelderland and Overijssel since December 2025. More than 50 properties were targeted, with suspects often using all-terrain vehicles or vans to ram gates and doors, causing extensive damage to windows and locks.

So far, police have not uncovered definitive proof linking the detainees to that criminal network. Spokespeople emphasised that the ongoing inquiry will determine whether the weapons stockpile was intended for violent offences or for intimidation during the burglary campaign.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the raids or the suspected gang activity to come forward. The arrested individuals remain in custody as forensic teams continue to analyse the seized weapons and digital evidence collected during the searches.
