In an unprecedented collaboration, Dutch design house Moooi has transformed a once-impossible digital concept into reality. Argentinian 3D artist Andrés Reisinger originally envisioned the Hortensia chair in 2018 as a purely virtual piece—until now.
From pixels to petals
The Hortensia chair, dubbed “the chair that could not be made,” is now in full production. Each armchair is draped in 30,000 individual fabric petals and offered in the original blush pink or a sophisticated grey.
Innovations behind the magic
- Rigid steel frame coated with injection-moulded foam for strength and comfort
- Laser-cut polyester fabric shaped into long scalloped strips
- Clusters of 40 petals sewn onto a thick elastic backing using specialized industrial machines
This marks the first time a design conceived exclusively for the digital realm has entered mass production, merging virtual creativity with manufacturing prowess.
“The Hortensia was considered impossible to produce – and yet here we are,” said Moooi CEO Robin Bevers, celebrating this milestone in furniture design.
