Two Amsterdam twentysomethings, Max and James, have built their very own brown café in a corner of their third-floor flat after missing the cozy atmosphere of neighborhood pubs. Measuring just 2.5 by 2.5 metres next to their washing machine, the DIY bar recaptures all the warmth of an Amsterdam gezelligheid.
They’ve installed brown laminate flooring, heavy curtains and a collection of prullaria—knick-knacks that fill traditional cafés. Called Café Van Dissel in a tongue-in-cheek nod to RIVM director Jaap van Dissel, the bar pours only Dutch beer and bar snacks—no cocktails or fancy drinks allowed. Phones stay tucked away and jackets must be hung up properly before you sit. However, they’ll wink at a shot of jenever or Berenburg.
The first visit is free; for your return, you’re expected to bring a small gift. They’ve even sourced a hard-boiled egg holder—cupcake-style—and hope to add a traditional table carpet soon.
