Dutch brand Moooi produces ‘impossible’ flower chair

Dutch brand Moooi has teamed up with Argentinian 3D artist Andrés Reisinger to bring his Hortensia chair—once deemed “impossible” to manufacture—from the digital realm into mass production.

First conceived as a purely digital design in 2018, the Hortensia chair now exists as a tangible piece covered in 30,000 delicate fabric petals. Available in its signature pink or a sleek grey, this marks the first time a product born in the virtual world has been scaled up for large‐scale production.

To achieve the intricate look, Moooi replaced the original wooden frame with steel and wrapped it in injection-moulded foam. Lightweight polyester fabric is laser-cut into long scalloped strips, grouped into clusters of 40 petals, and then stitched onto a stretch backing textile using specialized sewing machines.

“The Hortensia was considered impossible to produce—and yet here we are,” says Moooi CEO Robin Bevers.
