A coalition of Amsterdam taxi drivers has unveiled NLCabs, a homegrown ride-hailing app designed to curb Uber’s dominance in the city. Developed over the past six months by a group of 30 local cab operators, the platform promises fairer fares for passengers and a more transparent fee structure for drivers.
A Homegrown Alternative to Uber
While Uber has grown rapidly in Amsterdam since launching in 2014, many drivers have complained about high commission fees and unpredictable pricing. NLCabs aims to address these concerns by offering a flat 10% commission on each fare, compared to Uber’s standard 25–30% cut. The app will also display estimated fares upfront, reducing disputes over meter surcharges during peak hours.

“We love the flexibility of ride-hailing, but we also deserve fair compensation,” said Jan de Vries, one of NLCabs’ founding drivers. “With our own app, we can ensure better working conditions for drivers and more reliable service for passengers.”
Amsterdam’s municipal government, which recently tightened regulations on English-language taxi apps, has welcomed the initiative as a step toward promoting locally controlled transport services. City officials expect NLCabs to comply fully with new licensing requirements and accessibility standards introduced earlier this year.
Looking Ahead
The founding group plans to roll out NLCabs across all Amsterdam boroughs by December, targeting a fleet of 200 vehicles. If successful, they aim to expand into other Dutch cities such as Rotterdam and The Hague. In the meantime, users can download the app on both iOS and Android devices and benefit from discounted launch fares through October.
