On April 30, a retired couple from Amsterdam moved into Europe’s first fully 3D-printed house in Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant. The cream-colored, modern home has a bunker-like aesthetic, yet thanks to extra-thick insulation and a connection to the local heating network it remains exceptionally comfortable and energy efficient.
The house’s walls were printed layer by layer at a factory in Eindhoven, then loaded onto trucks and delivered to the building site. Once the components were set on their foundation, workers added the roof, window frames and interior finishes to complete the structure.
One major advantage of 3D printing is its precision: concrete is applied only where it’s needed, reducing both the structural load and material waste. This method makes 3D-printed housing a greener alternative to traditional construction.
Although still in its early stages, many in the construction industry view 3D printing as a promising way to cut costs and minimize environmental impact. In the Netherlands, it also offers a potential solution to the current shortage of skilled bricklayers.
Having lived in four different homes over the past six years, the couple will pay €800 per month to rent the 3D-printed house for six months starting August 1. In an overheated housing market with hardly any rentals available, this represents an exceptionally attractive deal.
