Thanks to social media platforms like BookTok and Bookstagram, Dutch readers are increasingly turning to English-language titles. In response, the Netherlands has seen a noticeable uptick in bookstores dedicated solely to English publications.
From intimate independents in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district to dedicated sections in larger urban stores, these shops now offer everything from bestselling fiction and graphic novels to academic texts and poetry. Many host author talks, book clubs, and language-exchange evenings, creating vibrant communities centered around English-language literature.
“Our foot traffic has doubled over the past year,” says one bookstore owner. “Events promoted on social media attract customers who might never have considered visiting a physical shop before.” Students, expats and lifelong learners alike are flocking to discover the latest releases and hidden gems in their original language.
Publishers and distributors are answering the call by increasing imports from the UK and US, while local booksellers expand their online catalogues to reach readers outside major cities. Pop-up stores and book fairs in Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague are further raising the profile of English-language books.
With demand continuing to climb, experts predict more hybrid models will emerge—combining the charm of brick-and-mortar shops with robust digital services—to ensure that English-language reading remains accessible to audiences across the country.
