Housing Minister Eleanor Boekholt-O’Sullivan has pinpointed five development zones across the country set to deliver 30,000 new homes by 2035. This initiative forms a central pillar of the government’s drive to ease the national housing shortage and curb escalating property prices.
Strategic locations and housing targets
- Northwest Greenfield, Province X: 8,000 energy-efficient homes surrounded by new parks and cycle paths.
- Riverfront Quarter, Region Y: 6,500 mixed-use apartments with direct links to existing tram and bus lines.
- Historic Docklands, City Z: 5,000 loft-style residences repurposed from disused warehouses.
- Outskirts Expansion, Town W: 4,000 affordable units complemented by community centres and playgrounds.
- Suburban Link, Area V: 6,500 family houses and multistorey flats located near new schools and healthcare facilities.
Funding for these developments will be drawn from a mix of national grants, municipal budgets and private-sector investment. Each site is required to meet stringent environmental standards, incorporating renewable energy systems, green corridors and sustainable water management.
Local response and implementation timeline
Opposition parties have welcomed the scale of the proposal, but some municipal councils warn that road capacity and school places must expand in parallel. Environmental organisations have praised the green guidelines but are calling for stronger protections of protected wildlife habitats.
Minister Boekholt-O’Sullivan confirmed that detailed zoning proposals will be submitted to parliament early next year, with provisional building permits due by mid-2025. “By 2035, these new neighbourhoods will not only ease the housing crunch but also set new standards for sustainable community development,” she said.
