Investigation after Feyenoord fans set off fireworks at Cambuur

During Saturday’s Eredivisie clash at Cambuur Stadion, fireworks launched from the away section by Feyenoord supporters landed among home fans, injuring five people. Four victims were taken to hospital suffering from hearing trauma and burns after pyrotechnics exploded close to their seats.

KNVB to review rules on match disturbances

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced it will reassess its protocols on fan behaviour and stadium security in response to the incident. The governing body plans to consult with clubs, stadium operators and law enforcement agencies to strengthen measures aimed at preventing the use of pyrotechnics within arenas.

Investigation and potential penalties

Leeuwarden police have opened a formal inquiry, examining CCTV footage and eyewitness statements to identify those responsible. Under KNVB regulations, supporters found guilty of public order offences could face stadium bans of up to five years.

  • Club fines: Cambuur was fined €4,500 for inadequate organisation of away supporters, while Feyenoord received a €2,000 fine for insufficient supervision.
  • Stadium bans: Individuals convicted of bringing in or igniting fireworks may be barred from professional matches nationwide.
  • Travel requirements: All clubs will now be required to arrange secure transportation for away fans to ensure proper screening before arrival.

Clubs to reinforce safety measures

Cambuur’s board has proposed relocating the official away-fan shuttle service from Leeuwarden to Zwolle to reduce risks during travel. Feyenoord officials have pledged full cooperation with police and local authorities to ensure supporters comply with enhanced security checks.

As both clubs await the outcome of the police investigation, the KNVB is set to unveil updated safety guidelines ahead of the new season. The incident has reignited debate over the adequacy of current regulations and the need for stricter enforcement to safeguard supporters and maintain order at Dutch football matches.
